As someone who's reviewed thousands of undergraduate resumes, I can tell you that this document is often your first impression with potential employers, internship coordinators and scholarship committees. Your resume isn't just a list of what you've done; it's a marketing tool that showcases your potential. The good news? You've got more experience than you think. Let's turn those class projects, part-time jobs and club activities into a resume that opens doors.

Resume Structure and Format

Keep your undergraduate resume clean and scannable—most recruiters spend just 7.4 seconds on initial resume screening! A single page is perfect for most undergrads (trust me, nobody expects a sophomore to have 3 pages of experience).

  • Stick to standard fonts like Calibri or Arial at 10-12pt size
  • Use consistent formatting for section headers
  • Include plenty of white space—cramming text to the margins looks desperate
  • Save as a PDF (unless specifically asked for a .doc) to preserve formatting
  • Filename should be professional: "FirstName_LastName_Resume.pdf"

Profile/Summary Section

While not mandatory for undergrads, a brief summary can help frame your experience—especially if you're applying for positions aligned with your major. Keep it under 3 sentences and highlight your academic focus, relevant skills and career goals.

Skip generic objectives like "seeking to utilize my skills in a challenging position." Instead, focus on specific value you bring. What makes you different from the other 75 applications they'll receive?

Education Section

As an undergrad, your education typically comes first on your resume. Include:

  • University name, location, expected graduation date
  • Degree and major/minor
  • GPA (if above 3.0)
  • Relevant coursework (4-6 courses most applicable to the position)
