How to Write a Student Resume
Introduction
Writing your first student resume might feel overwhelming—especially when you're juggling classes, extracurriculars, and maybe even a part-time job. But here's the truth: a well-crafted student resume can open doors to internships, part-time jobs, and even scholarship opportunities that might otherwise remain closed. Think of your resume as your personal marketing document, telling potential employers or admissions committees what makes you worth taking a chance on (even without decades of experience!).
Your resume isn't just about listing what you've done—it's about showcasing who you are and the potential you bring to the table. For students, this means highlighting your education, relevant coursework, and transferable skills even when your work history is limited.
Resume Structure and Format
Keep your student resume clean, readable, and scannable. Recruiters typically spend just 6-7 seconds on their first glance!
- Length: Stick to one page. As a student, you simply don't need more space yet.
- Fonts: Use readable fonts like Arial, Calibri, or Georgia at 10-12pt size.
- Margins: Set at 0.75-1 inch all around—gives you space without looking cramped.
- File format: Save as a PDF unless specifically asked for another format (preserves your formatting).
- Naming convention: "FirstName_LastName_Resume.pdf" makes it easy for recruiters to find.
Education Section (Front and Center!)
As a student, your education is likely your strongest qualification—so put it at the top. Include:
- Your school, expected graduation date, and major/minor
- GPA (if 3.0 or higher)
- Relevant coursework (4-6 courses most relevant to the position)

Don't have much work experience? No problem! Include:

For each experience, include: Organization name, your role, dates, and 2-3 bullet points highlighting what you accomplished—not just your responsibilities. Use action verbs and, when possible, include numbers.

- Language skills (specify proficiency level)
- Soft skills (but be prepared to back these up with examples)
Keywords and ATS Tips
Many companies use Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS) to filter resumes before a human ever sees them. To get past these digital gatekeepers:
- Mirror language from the job posting (if they say "proficient in Microsoft Excel," don't just say "spreadsheet skills")
