I've reviewed thousands of design resumes over my career, and the ones that land interviews perfectly balance showcasing creativity with maintaining professionalism. Your resume is essentially your first portfolio piece – it needs to demonstrate your design sensibilities while clearly communicating your experience and skills.
Resume Structure and Format
While you have more formatting freedom than accountants or lawyers, your resume still needs structure. Keep these guidelines in mind:
- Stick to 1-2 pages max (one page for juniors, two for experienced artists)
- Use clean typography with no more than 2-3 font families
- Maintain sufficient white space – crowded layouts scream amateur
- Save and send as a PDF (never Word!) to preserve your formatting
- Consider including a small personal logo or subtle design element

This section carries the most weight. For each position, include:

- Your title and a brief description of the company (if not well-known)

- Specific software, techniques, or approaches used
Start bullets with strong action verbs: Designed, Created, Developed, Conceptualized, Produced, Collaborated. Avoid passive voice like "Was responsible for..."
Education and Certifications
List formal education with degree, institution, and graduation year. If you're a recent grad, this can go above your experience.
